Living the E Life
It's been a minute... let's return to our 10 mindsets! These help give us a framework to move through the inevitable challenges that come with being an entrepreneur. We've found each mindset to be incredibly helpful, though you might focus on different ones at different times to help you create a fulfilling entrepreneurial life.
Here's mindset #5:
No one does it alone.
If you are in the world of private practice or are considering it, you have probably heard the word solopreneur. While this word can describe some of the realities inherent in "wearing all of the hats" while being in business on your own, it misses one of the key points of entrepreneurship.
Yes, being a solopreneur (like many of us in mental performance are) often means that you are the one creating the business, ensuring that the business runs smoothly, doing client-facing work, determining how your business will navigate the ups and downs of the field, and what can feel like a million other things. And yet, we don't know a single successful entrepreneur who works completely in isolation.
We all need help and support along this journey.
This may include more formal support – an attorney on retainer, a bookkeeper, an accountant, and/or an assistant. These folks often have expertise that we don't and save us a lot of time and energy (thank goodness!). They are key to ensuring that our businesses are legal, ethical, financially sound, and efficient.
Help and support may also come more informally. This type of support is more pervasive and less acknowledged than you might realize. Informal support comes in many shapes and forms, such as:
former coaches, teammates, professors, and classmates as well as other people you know who now refer clients to you
colleagues who act as a sounding board by listening to your ideas and questions, giving advice, and offering peer consultations
mentors who support and facilitate your growth as a mental performance coach and/or entrepreneur
friends who may tug you back into the real world when you feel the tug to work all the time (if you're like us, it's hard to turn the entrepreneur brain off!)
family who may provide you with time, finances, and other resources to run your business (e.g., a partner who shares the responsibility of taking care of your kids and house, a partner who also works so there is less financial strain as you develop your business, a family member who provides financial support or childcare, etc.)
your closest people who encourage you when you face challenges and believe in you when your own confidence is shaken
Even if you are "doing the work alone," you are NOT on this entrepreneurial journey alone. Take a moment to list out all of the people who are behind you and alongside you for this journey. Consider who else you might want to reach out to who can provide additional support. If you want to join others actively building their mental performance coaching businesses and embarking on this entrepreneurial journey, check out the Establish course, where our community is growing.
Key Takeaway: Being an entrepreneur can feel lonely, but it is not a solo sport. Recognize, appreciate, and cultivate your support – formally and informally.
Psst: in the Establish course we help you explore this mindset further and guide you through exercises to determine what we are calling your people resources, tramily, and E team!
